You are welcome to read an interesting article titled ‘OEE, MTBF and MTTR Indices- Are They More Than Just Absolute Values?’, which appeared in the latest issue of Służby Utrzymania Ruchu (Maintenance Services) (5/2011) magazine. The author explains how OEE, MTBF and MTTR indices should be properly calculated, so that their continuous monitoring could bring real advantages to manufacturing companies. Particular attention should be given to data collection in order to calculate the aforementioned indices. At the initial stage of the analysis one can rely only on reports which are manually filled out by operators. However, in order to achieve full reliability of the indicators one should base the analysis on real data. This is what MES systems are for, as they provide automatic collection of data directly from machines, they calculate business indicators (for instance, OEE), and they also facilitate the analysis of these indicators with respect to the entire manufacturing process.
